Weymouth, MA service area

If a pipe bursts or a drain backs up in Weymouth, call (617) 752-0573. That is our 24/7 dispatch line for emergency plumbing in Weymouth, MA, and it answers around the clock. We are based at 875 Washington St in Braintree, and Weymouth borders Braintree on the east, so it is a short drive across the line.

Weymouth does not have one downtown. The town names four village centers, and each has its own street pattern and mix of homes. This page walks through the villages one at a time, because pipe age, drainage and water supply differ across a town of about 60,000 people.

Licensed plumbers who pull the permit.

Weymouth permits go through the Department of Municipal Licenses and Inspections, and only licensed individuals can take them out.

Weymouth Landing, along the Braintree line

Weymouth's village page puts Weymouth Landing on Washington Street, which is Route 53, with its western border shared with Braintree along Smelt Brook. The Front Street area is a national historic district, and the Landing has a commuter rail station. Buildings in a historic area are usually older, so we expect a mix of old and newer pipe and ask what is visible before we cut into a wall.

This part of town sits right next to our Braintree base, and older buildings here raise a common question about water heater replacement. A tank that is leaking at the base is done, and a replacement is the repair. A tank leaking from a fitting at the top may be a simple fix, which is why we look before we recommend.

Jackson Square and East Weymouth

Jackson Square is the largest of the four village centers, at Broad, Commercial and Pleasant Streets in East Weymouth. Town Hall at 75 Middle Street, in ZIP 02189, holds the Department of Municipal Licenses and Inspections on the first floor. Its phone is 781-340-5004, it is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, and the inspector hours run 7:30 to 9 am.

That affects planning. After an emergency repair, the state rule requires the inspector to be notified, with inspection no later than the next working day. If your repair happens on a Friday evening, the inspection falls on the following working day, and we handle the notice.

Columbian Square and South Weymouth

Columbian Square sits east of Main Street, which is Route 18, in South Weymouth, near Fogg Library and Old South Union Church. South Shore Hospital is at 55 Fogg Road in ZIP 02190 and is open 24 hours. If anyone is hurt, call 911 first and let the plumbing wait.

The National Weather Service recorded the Old Swamp River at South Weymouth at 5.70 feet on March 15, 2010, against a flood stage of 4.5 feet. The river crested again at 5.46 feet on March 30. If your lower level has ever taken on water in a wet spring, a sump pump with a battery backup is worth discussing, because a pump fails exactly when the power does.

Bicknell Square and the northern part of town

Bicknell Square is in North Weymouth, around North, Sea and Bridge Streets on Route 3A. The town sewer page notes that the Fore River and Back River form part of the north and east boundary. We have no documented flooding history for specific streets in this part of town, so we do not assume one.

Our advice is practical instead. If a lower level here takes in water after hard rain, tell us the address and we look at the sump, the floor drain and the foundation drain before anyone recommends large work. Ask whether a basement waterproofing plan is needed at all, since a pump and a clean drain often come first.

Prep before the plumber arrives in Weymouth

Four steps buy time and protect your belongings while a visit is arranged.

1

Shut the water at the main.

Close the main valve where the line enters the house. Open a low faucet to drain what is left in the pipes.

2

Kill power in wet areas.

If a basement is flooding near the panel or outlets, call the electric utility or an electrician before stepping in. Never touch a switch while standing in water.

3

Move what you can.

Lift boxes, rugs and electronics above the wet area. Photograph the water level for your insurer.

4

Call the 24/7 line.

Call (617) 752-0573 and tell us your village or ZIP. We give you the next steps and the earliest same-day appointment available.

Weymouth's own water and sewer, and what that changes

Weymouth runs its own Water Department. Its 2025 report names the Great Pond Water Treatment Plant, with Whitman's Pond as a supplement, and a well plant on the Mill River Aquifer, serving 16,773 customers. MWRA lists Weymouth for sewer only, so unlike Quincy, your tap water is not MWRA water. The town disinfects with chlorine, not chloramine, and it prints no hardness figure, so we do not quote one.

The town also states that it has faced intermittent water shortages and bans since the 1960s. If you run an irrigation system, check the current restrictions before you test it, and look for a leak if your bill runs high. A buried line that leaks wastes water that the town may be rationing, so leak detection is worth the call.

The town's sewer system has about 320 miles of line and 11 connection points into the MWRA system. Most of it was built between 1947 and 1980. For you, that is the same era as many of the homes, so a camera on your lateral shows whether roots or a cracked section are causing the slow drain, and sewer line cleaning restores flow.

Weymouth homes by age

Census survey estimates put Weymouth's median year built at 1964. About 22 percent of units date from 1939 or earlier, 24 percent from 1940 to 1959, and 25 percent from 1960 to 1979. About 67 percent of homes are owner-occupied and 60 percent are single-unit, so most calls come from owners who decide quickly.

Homes from the 1940s through the 1970s are now old enough that original supply valves and drain stubs fail. When you call, tell us the year if you know it, and we plan around likely materials. Our Quincy and Holbrook pages describe neighbors with different housing mixes.

We have not confirmed Weymouth's rule, so ask the Water and Sewer Division before connecting any discharge to a sewer line. We can run the discharge outdoors and away from the foundation.
